Barre Gazette Worcester Countys Oldest Newspaper!
The Barre Gazette has the distinction of being Worcester Countys
oldest newspaper. For over 170 years the Barre Gazette never missed
an issue. Wars, fire, holidays, floods, hurricanes and other storms
did not stop the paper from coming out on a weekly basis.
The first issue on Nov. 1, 1834 was a four page sheet with a heading
Farmers Gazette. A hand carved woden cut by Albert Alden
showed the remarkable water fall at Cooks Canyon.
That papers farm background is seen in the logo that shows a
sheath of grain, a plow, hay fork, hay rack, sickle and other farm
implements. The paper serves eight towns - Barre, Hardwick, Hubbardston,
New Braintree, North Brookfield, Oakham, Petersham and Rutland.
